Sample Instruction: ASSURE Model

Analyze Learners

The students are between the ages of 6 and 7.  Some students are bilingual and have Spanish speaking parents at home.  Most of the students are able to read simple sentences in English.  These students have been learning about what is weather and weather patterns.

State Objectives

The goal objective is stated as follows:  After completing this lesson, first grade students will be able to identify and label different kinds of clouds without teacher assistance.

Select Methods, Media, and Materials

The visual presentation will consist of a digital projector, a laptop, and an interactive white board.  The presentation will engage the students in the lesson by introducing key vocabulary such as: cumulus, stratus, cirrus, and nimbus.  For example on a slide the students will see the vocabulary word cumulus cloud, and they will be asked if they know how it looks.  After the short discussion, the picture will appear and the students will observe what a cumulus cloud looks like is.

Utilize Media and Materials

Prior to the lesson the teacher will check all equipment to make sure it is working properly.  The interactive white board should be set up and calibrated.  Also, the PowerPoint lesson should be tested to make sure it works properly and all slides are in order.  Picture cards will be ready per group in case of electronic equipment malfunctions.

Require Learner Participation

All students will be encouraged to participate by the use of popsicle sticks with numbers and previously assigned numbers to students. All students will be given a chance to participate and answer questions.  The use of the interactive white board should engage students in the lesson and keep them focused.  After the lesson, teacher will ask comprehension questions and review the vocabulary list and the pictures of the different kinds of clouds.

Evaluate and Revise

All responses from students should be considered by the teacher to evaluate and revise.  The assessment will consist of a picture and word matching on the different kinds of clouds.  The assessment will allow the teacher to check for lesson effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments before moving on to the next lesson.
